Giving back is a part of our core values at Parallel and over the years we have been proud to support both local and national charities. As we specialise in translation services in the field of Clinical Trials and Pharmaceutical Development, it is particularly important to us to be able to support charities that are investing so much in the research and development of treatments which may prevent, alleviate and ultimately find a cure for a variety of diseases. This year we have chosen to dedicate our fundraising efforts to Leukaemia Busters which, founded in 1989, is celebrating its 30th anniversary!
A local charity
With its flagship research centre based at Southampton General Hospital, Leukaemia Busters’ research focuses on the discovery and development of novel antibody-based treatments for leukaemia and lymphoma, and is funded entirely by donations. A charity with comparatively low overheads, an amazing 97 pence in every pound donated goes directly to funding its cutting edge research.
Update on Parallel’s 2019 fundraising
Our Operations Manager, Paul, got our 2019 fundraising off to a flying start when he abstained from alcoholic beverages and generated over £200 with his ‘dry January’. He also conquered his addiction to crisps and, not only did Leukaemia Busters gain a few pounds but, according to Paul’s JustGiving page, he was delighted to report that he had lost a few!
In March and April we all spring cleaned our bookshelves at home and raised over £100 from running a book sale in the office. Needless to say the shelves filled up again with new purchases! The unsold books were donated to Jane Scarth House, a local charity providing emotional and practical support to anyone whose life is affected by cancer.
To mark the 2019 midway point our Business Manager, Laura, volunteered to abseil 100m down Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower! One June Sunday morning, several of the Parallel team, together with Laura’s family and friends, gathered at the foot of the tower to cheer her on. Fortunately the rain held off and the wind direction remained steady enough for her to complete the descent smoothly. She even managed a wave and a few ‘baby bounces’ along the way! With donations made via Laura’s JustGiving page, those made directly to Leukaemia Busters and the extra received thanks to Gift Aid, she has managed to raise over £800.
Watch this space!
We set a target to raise £2,000 this year and, thanks to the generosity of all who have supported us so far, we are over halfway there! We look forward to continuing to raise vital funds for Leukaemia Busters over the coming months and have a few ideas in the pipeline. In fact, our challenge for July and August is Race at your Pace; some of the Parallel team have completed their July challenge and several are now in the middle of their August challenge, so watch this space!
We are also pleased to announce we will be supporting Macmillan in September for the fifth year running with more coffee and cake (two firm favourites in the Parallel office)!
