Established Expertise

Founded in 1997, Parallel is an independent UK-based Language Service Provider, with 20 years’ experience in providing specialist translations to the medical, pharmaceutical and patent sectors. Originally based in central London, Parallel moved to Southampton in 2003 and is proud to be one of the leading employers of language graduates on the South Coast.

We are experts in translation and proofreading services from/into all major European languages, as well as many Middle Eastern, Far Eastern and African languages.

Though occasionally making us appear uncompromising, we would rather refuse a project than let down a client. we know how crucial our translators are to our business and we endeavour to nurture our relationships with them in all aspects of our collaboration

Support

we cannot always promise to obtain the answers you are looking for from our clients, but we will do our best to liaise effectively and professionally

Payment

we commit to payment of all invoices on 30 days net (i.e. end of month following invoice). No ifs, ands or buts. We try to pay bank charges where possible, and we are often happy to oblige with earlier payment when tax bills require it!

Communication

our in-house team members receive in-depth training on all our processes so that they can communicate effectively with our translators. They are encouraged to foster personal and genuine relationships and to pass on our appreciation

Our Team

We're not robots!

Our friendly and approachable in-house Project Managers are all educated to at least degree level in Modern Languages, with many also holding a Master’s degree in Translation Studies.

Our staff have an excellent understanding of the sectors we work in and a great attention to detail – a must-have for our meticulous in-house checking procedures.

We are one of the leading employers of language graduates on the South Coast and are proud to have forged strong links with the Universities of Southampton and Portsmouth. It is fantastic to be able to offer local opportunities to graduates so that they can start a meaningful career using the language skills that they have worked so hard to acquire.

Lucy

Managing Director

Lucy studied French and Spanish at the University of Westminster. She set up Parallel in London, in 1997. Relocating the business to Southampton in 2003, she remains hands-on as Managing Director and sole proprietor. Her main day-to-day focus is quality control in all aspects of the business, as well as fostering the team ethos on which the company has been built.

Nick

Production Manager

Nick graduated in German and European Studies from the University of the West of England in Bristol. He has studied some French and Russian in the past and has also returned to Germany for an intensive short course at the Goethe-Institut in Munich. He is now trying to teach himself some Welsh, and is a keen hiker and runner in his spare time.

Laura

Business Manager

Laura studied French & German (Linguistic Studies) at the University of Southampton. 2018 has seen her preparing and implementing changes for GDPR and training staff on our new, bespoke Project Management software programme in preparation for launch. And, of course, always seeking new translators to join our network of expert freelancers.

Tessa

Deputy Production Manager

Tessa studied European Studies (French and Spanish) at the University of Southampton, including a year living and studying at university in France. She has since studied Beginner’s Greek and Italian for three years and hopes to further her Italian studies in the future. She is hoping that this might include a trip to Italy to brush up on her language skills and sample the cuisine!

Paul

Operations Manager

Paul studied Scientific Illustration at S.I.H.E (now Southampton Solent University) He oversees all general operations, staff recruitment and welfare, as well as new business development. He presently supervises our translation technology research and evaluation programme. Paul has spent a large part of 2018 negotiating and co-ordinating our move to larger premises.

Hannah

Deputy Production Manager

Hannah studied German and Spanish at the University of Southampton. In 2018 she was awarded the CIoL Diploma in Translation. She enjoys participating in medical translation webinars and has recently finished her third year of Russian evening classes. Having completed Parallel’s Management Training Programme, Hannah deputises for Nick on a regular basis.

Karina

Project & Certification Manager

Karina studied French and German at the University of Southampton, including a year abroad at the University of Bayreuth. In 2018 she completed her first year of Polish evening classes and has also previously studied Italian and Russian. Karina attended the ITI’s Dual French/English Contract translation workshop and is also responsible for producing our Certificates of Translation.

Inma

Project Manager

Inma is a native Spanish speaker. She studied the Translation and Interpreting of English, German and Modern Greek at the University of Málaga and her Master’s in Translation Studies at the University of Portsmouth. To date, she has completed four online courses related to clinical trials and med/pharm translation into Spanish. She has just finished her second year of Russian evening classes.

Vicky

Translation & Technology Manager

Vicky studied Japanese & Spanish at the University of Leeds and completed her Master’s in Translation Studies at the University of Portsmouth. She continues to study new languages part-time, including Russian and Korean, in addition to researching current translation technology trends, most recently achieving Level 1 Certification with MemoQ.

Rebecca

Project Manager

Rebecca studied French and Spanish at Cardiff University before completing a Master’s in Translation and Professional Language Skills at the University of Bath. In 2018 she completed her first Arabic course, and hopes to travel abroad to Morocco or Dubai to put her knowledge to the test. She plans to continue with Arabic but would also like to learn Russian – maybe not simultaneously!

Summer

Project Manager

Summer studied French, Spanish and German at the University of Southampton including a year in Germany, working as a language assistant. She recently completed a stage 1 language course in Arabic, which proved challenging but very interesting. This year she went to Paris for the first time, and she is presently house-hunting in Southampton.

Lizzie

Project Manager

Lizzie graduated from the University of Southampton with a degree in German and Spanish Linguistic Studies, which included a year in Murcia, teaching English, followed by a month in Berlin writing and editing a travel guide about the city. This year she finished her first year of Italian evening classes and is looking forward to continuing them next year.
